It all started the day I realized I could finish papers and homework the night before. Then, I realized I could just do them through the night, and THEN, I found out that I could actually start it early morning on the day it was due. This behavior reached a whole new level when I actually reached the point of starting my Math project 3 hours before it was due, an experience that ended with me having a high amount of adrenaline and stress which gave me a headache for one entire week. I literally still have a picture uploading the work at 11:59pm.
Of course, this all resulted in a terrible Math grade, which my parents killed me for. I’m a person that learns by failing and by failing I mean causing a disaster and then reflecting. There’s actually one time I burned my grandmother's house with fireworks in Christmas, and from that day I learned the correct way of using fireworks. So this situation applied directly to this one. I messed up, my parents were angry and I knew that I had to quit that habit of procrastinating.
But I know that I can’t kid anyone. Trying to get off procrastination is like telling an obese to avoid overeating or depressed people avoid apathy. Based on research made in University of Purdue telling an specific person to change something overnight will mostly make them fail or make it worst and create more anxiety. Procrastination is a real problem, even considered as an illness difficult to cure.
This summer, I successfully found the cure. I started reading Sean Covey’s book, “The 7 habits of Highly Effective Teens” and things started getting interesting because I could connect to the book. It talked about a kid from U.S.A who said that he finished a whole 44 thousand word essay the very last day, while he had been given 4 months to complete it. Or people that had to take pills after 48 hours work spam to finish something that they had 6 months to do. But all of this examples finally got to one calculation, which was clear for me. ORGANIZATION and SELF ESTEEM. Although it’s so hard to cure it, you really have no other choice. Because this spreads and grows, until eventually you don’t even think it’s a bad habit anymore.
If you are reading this and you are connecting with this examples and starting to find out that you are a procrastinator, please go and buy a small notebook or even in your phone download “Homework App” in app store which you write tasks and you get daily notification to remember. It's never too late to get rid of the laziness and start achieving goals.
